The Rise of Home Automation

You’ve likely heard of a smart home or a home automation system. While such ideas seemed like science fiction not too long ago, they have now arrived in the mainstream. It no longer takes large amounts of money or serious technological knowledge to automate your home.

Since this technology is becoming more and more common, it might be time to move beyond asking “what is home automation?” and toward finding out what these systems can do for you.

What is Home Automation?

Home automation is the process of automatically controlling devices in the home. It can make life more convenient, save time, make your home more comfortable, and help you save money on heating, cooling, and electricity.

With home automation, different hardware appliances can be integrated with internet technology so they can function without significant human effort. Home automation is often called “smart home technology,” however the two terms are slightly different. A smart home device is one that can perform a task based on a schedule or a command, while home automation typically involves utilizing smart home devices together.

Types of Home Automation

Some of the simplest types of smart home devices are ones that can operate on a schedule, such as a programmable thermostat. These systems can save energy by controlling the temperature in your home to use less energy when it isn’t needed. Some thermostats can “learn” your schedule and adjust automatically.

However, there are larger systems that involve various devices as well. These systems can simplify your life, keep you safe, and save you money. For instance, your heating and cooling system can be controlled remotely by your phone, allowing you to adjust the temperature in your home from wherever you are. You can also integrate other tools so that your home uses less energy while you’re away, then set the system so it gets your home comfortable for you before you walk through the door.

Another of the most common types of home automation comes in the form of a security system. A system can be set up so that your doors can be locked or unlocked via an application on your smartphone, and home security cameras and alarms can be used as part of a home automation system to alert you of potential crimes and protect your property. For instance, you can receive an alert on your home when someone walks by one of your security cameras, then access footage remotely.

Another powerful example of home automation is lighting. You can use smart technology to turn lights on and off with your voice, an app, or on a schedule. This isn’t just convenient, but it also saves energy.

Why You Should Consider this Technology for Your Home

As mentioned, there are several reasons why you may want to consider home automation technology. The first is convenience. How often have you been at work and wonder if you remembered to lock the back door or turn down the thermostat? Or been relaxed and cozy in your bed, only to realize you left the light on downstairs? With home automation technology, you can use your phone or your voice to check on the situation and make the right adjustments.

Another benefit is safety. Not only can you watch your security cameras remotely, and respond to any alarms that may sound, but there are other automation aspects that can keep you and your home safe as well. For instance, flood, temperature, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors can send you alerts wherever you are, so you can quickly respond to trouble conditions in your home.

There is also significant cost savings to using home automation technology. By heating and cooling your home more efficiently, you’ll save money on your heating bills without sacrificing comfort.
